Broken doesn't mean worthless
Scrap gold is valued by its weight and karat, not by how it looks. A snapped chain, a lone earring, a bent ring or a charm with a missing clasp can be worth the same as a perfect piece of the same weight and karat.
Things people often forget they have
- Knotted or broken chains
- Single earrings and earring backs
- Outdated class rings and old wedding bands
- Gold dental crowns and bridges
- Charms, pendants and watch cases
How to get ready
- Sort pieces by stamp (10K, 14K, 18K) if you can — it speeds things up, but we can do it too.
- Keep any stones in the pieces; don't pry them out.
- Dental gold: you don't need to clean it perfectly, just store it in a small bag.
- Bring a photo ID.
